Becoming The Shepherd: 4 key Leadership Principles That Will Win People Over

Leadership is the act of guiding and directing individuals or a group to achieve results, either personally or professionally, that individuals in that group would not have achieved on their own. A group could be an organization, a corporation or a business. With the mentality and principles of a leader, you can guide your team, company, or organization towards exponential success!

The first principles of leadership are teaching and learning. When you teach something to someone, you guide them towards something new. Teaching is not only a principle of leadership, but is an essential mechanism of guiding an individual or an organization. With teaching, you must be open to learning. As an educator for the past 30+ years, I have discovered that the best way to learn and master any subject is to teach it. When you repeat subject matter often, and make it your own, it becomes something of second nature (I.e. Feynman Technique). Knowledge is power and as we teach young people the principles of entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership, in our seminars, workshops and camps, we at BIZNOVATOR become empowered ourselves.

Respect and good character are two other essentials to guiding you and your organization towards success. Respect is the manifestation of humility and admiration towards a certain individual or group. When you give respect to your colleagues, classmates, bosses, teachers, and others you come into contact with, you give the impression that you know how to guide and lead people. Respect is an indicator of good character, along with charisma, mindfulness, kindness, discipline, and positivity. These are all important attributes as they allow you as an individual to embody the attributes of successful leaders.

Caring is the most natural principle of leadership. Biologically and chemically, we as humans care for one another and strive to comfort those in need; it is a natural instinct. When we see someone crying, we naturally feel empathy and the need to go out of our way to help that person. The leader comforts others because he or she aspires to help others overcome obstacles and achieve success in life. The leader is the teacher, the charismatic figure, the assistant, the counselor, and the inspiration.

Being an inspiration to others is the most essential part of becoming a strong leader. Leaders set great examples for others. Looking back on your own life, you may see that you’ve had multiple inspirations: books, movies, historical figures, fictional characters, but it’s the inspiration that a leader instills in their followers that makes the difference. Try leading with passion and purpose; make it meaningful to maximize the impact.
